Mash - what size?

I want to start working on my mash (I will be using a high grade mash) since it will need 6 months to get ready to distill. Since I will have a 5 liter still (which I assume I should only fill with about 4 liters of mash), should I make my mash in this size - or is it better to make a larger batch (8 gallon and 20 gallon fermentation buckets are a normal size here).  I was not sure if you could just use part of the mash and save the rest to distill later.

Yes, a high-grade mash is storable, so you can prepare a mash in any size, use just a part of the mash for distilling, and save the rest to distill later.
